Is There a Link Between Blood Type and Alzheimer’s Disease?

The search for the root cause of Alzheimer’s disease is ongoing, with researchers exploring a variety of potential factors, from genetics to lifestyle. One fascinating area of study has been the potential connection between blood type and a person’s risk for developing cognitive issues.

Recent studies have shown some intriguing, though not conclusive, findings. One study, in particular, found that people with the AB blood type—the least common blood type in the U.S.—were 82% more likely to develop thinking and memory problems that can lead to dementia compared to those with other blood types. Similarly, individuals with A, B, and AB blood types showed a higher risk for developing cognitive decline compared to those with Type O blood.

Understanding the Factors Behind Alzheimer’s

While these studies are interesting, it’s important to understand that no single factor is believed to be the root cause of Alzheimer’s. Instead, scientists believe it’s a combination of different elements, including:

  • Age: This is the most significant known risk factor. While Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, the risk increases with age, with most cases diagnosed in individuals 65 and older.
  • Genetics: Family history can play a role in a person’s risk.
  • Lifestyle and Environmental Factors: A person’s overall health, diet, and environment can influence brain health.

While Type O blood may be associated with a lower risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, which in turn can contribute to brain health, this doesn’t mean having a different blood type guarantees you’ll develop dementia. Research on blood type is just one piece of the puzzle.
